Take a mat at the back. Lots of people never move.

Your first yoga or mat Pilates class: what to book, what happens when you arrive, and what to bring.

Basics, or the course? A small class in a wide standing pose by the windows, following the person at the front

Basics, or the course?

Both are made for people who have never done a class. Pick the one that fits your week.

$18

Basics

Tuesday at 6:30pm or Saturday at 9am, 60 minutes. Come once, see how it feels, and come back when you like.

Good if your week changes, or you want to try it before you commit to anything.

$96

The beginners’ course

Four Sundays at 3:30pm, 75 minutes each, starting the first Sunday of the month. Then two weeks of every class.

Good if you’d rather start with the same small group and learn the basics in order.

Somewhere in between: a first week is $40 and gets you every class for seven days.

When you arrive.

We’re upstairs at 3417 Indianola Ave, one flight up. There is no lift; if the stairs are hard for you, write to us first.

  • ShoesOff at the door. There are cubbies for shoes, coats and bags.
  • Your matMats, blocks and straps are here. Take any spot you like; the back is a fine place to stay.
  • Say helloTell the teacher it’s your first class, and about any injury. They’ll give you an easier way into anything.
  • WearSomething you can move and sit on the floor in. Nothing special.

What happens in class.

Nobody is asked to show anything, and nobody watches you. The teacher talks you through each part.

A Basics class, 60 minutes

  1. 1About 20 minutes standing: easy shapes, slowly, with the breath.
  2. 2About 30 minutes on the mat: stretches and some core work, sitting and lying down.
  3. 3The last 10 minutes lying still. Most people’s favorite part.

The beginners’ course, four Sundays

  1. 1Standing and breathing.
  2. 2The floor and your middle: mat Pilates basics with Sami.
  3. 3Balance and twists.
  4. 4A whole class, slowly. Then you’re ready for any Basics or Slow flow.

Questions people ask.

Do I need to be flexible?
No. Getting more flexible is what the classes are for.
What if I can’t do something?
Do the easier version the teacher shows, or rest. Both are normal here.
Yoga or Pilates first?
Either. Basics is mostly yoga; the course’s second Sunday is Pilates.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes. Book two spots and come up together.
What if I can’t make it?
A class: cancel up to 12 hours before and nothing is lost. The course: cancel up to 48 hours before the first Sunday for a full refund.
