The kitchen takes its last order half an hour before we close, and the bar keeps pouring until the room empties. We close for two weeks after Christmas and on Good Friday — we post the exact dates on Instagram each year.

Getting here

Tram

Route 96 to Stop 20, then a three-minute walk east. The 1 and the 6 down Lygon Street will also get you within a block.

Parking

Unmetered street parking on Fenwick and Newry Streets after 18:00. Rathdowne Street itself is two-hour metered until then.

By bike

Hoops directly outside the door, and the Canning Street path runs one block west. We will keep an eye on it through the window.

Access

The dining room and bathrooms are step-free from the Rathdowne Street entrance. Tell us when you book and we will hold a table with room to move.

The room

Forty-two seats, one long table beside the fire, a bar you can eat at and two window seats we hold back every night. It is close together and it is loud — that is the point. If you want to hear every word, book early in the evening.

What to wear

Whatever you like. Half the room comes straight from work and the other half has clearly thought about it.

Children

Very welcome at lunch and at the early sitting. We have two high chairs and the kitchen will happily do a plain pasta.

Dogs

On the footpath tables, always. There is a water bowl by the door and usually a biscuit behind the bar.

Paying

Card or cash, no surcharge either way. We split bills, but only up to four ways — anything beyond that and the night gets away from us.

Groups & hire

The long table

Seven to fourteen, beside the fire, in the middle of the room rather than tucked away from it. Feasting menu at $85 a head.

Half the room

Up to twenty-four, the eastern half screened off, from Tuesday to Thursday. Minimum spend applies and includes the wine pairing.

Whole venue

Forty-two seated or sixty standing, the fire going and the bar open. Six weeks notice, and Marco will walk you through it.

Every one of these is a conversation rather than a form. Tell us the date, the number and roughly what the night is for, and we will come back the same day with a plan and a price.

Any amount, valid three years, printed on the same butcher paper we write the menu on. Email us and we will post one or hold it at the door.

Lost something

Everything left behind lives in a box behind the bar for a month. Call and describe it.

The fire is lit at nine

By the time you get here it has been going for eight hours — come and use it.

Tonight

The bar and the two window seats are held for walk-ins every night. If the calendar looks full it is still worth trying your luck at 17:30.
